How to maintain and clean your handmade Moroccan rug
Do you have a beautiful handwoven rug made of sheep wool from Morocco? Then you want to keep it as beautiful as possible so that you can enjoy it for a long time. Below you will find a number of tips for maintaining and cleaning your handmade Moroccan rug.
1. Vacuum regularly
Vacuum the rug regularly to remove dust and dirt. Use a soft brush head and vacuum in the direction of the pile to prevent damage to the fibers. Do this at least once a week, but depending on the use and location of the rug, more often may be necessary.
2. Turn the rug regularly
To distribute wear of the rug evenly, it is wise to turn the rug over every now and then. This prevents certain parts of the rug from wearing faster than other parts.
3. Avoid direct sunlight
Do not place or hang the rug in direct sunlight, as this can cause discolouration of the fibres. Also avoid placing the rug in a place where it can regularly get wet, such as the bathroom.
4. Hand wash or dry clean
If the rug gets dirty, it is best to wash it by hand or take it to the dry cleaners. Use lukewarm water and a mild detergent, and rinse the rug well. Hang the rug to dry, but avoid direct sunlight and heat sources such as a radiator. If you take the rug to the dry cleaners, make sure they have experience in cleaning Moroccan rugs.
5. Avoid harsh cleaning agents
Do not use harsh cleaning agents such as bleach or chemicals to remove stains. This can damage the rug and weaken the fibers.
With these tips you can ensure that your handmade Moroccan wool rug stays beautiful and lasts a long time.
