How to maintain and clean your handmade Moroccan rug

Zo onderhoud en reinig je jouw handgemaakte Marokkaanse vloerkleed

Do you own a unique hand-woven sheep's wool rug from Morocco? Then you naturally want to enjoy it for as long as possible. These special rugs are made with great care and craftsmanship and deserve careful daily maintenance. With the right attention, they will last for years.

Below you will find practical tips to keep your Moroccan rug beautiful and clean, without damaging the fibers or colors.

1. Vacuum regularly, but carefully

Vacuum your rug weekly to remove dust, sand, and other dirt. Preferably use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment and always vacuum in the direction of the pile (the nap of the rug). Note: Do not use a rotating brush, as this can damage the wool fibers.

2. Turn your rug occasionally

By regularly rotating your rug a quarter or half turn, you prevent uneven wear and discoloration due to light. Especially for rugs that are partially covered by furniture or are frequently walked on, this is an easy way to keep them looking beautiful longer.

3. Freshen up your carpet by airing it outside

Wool is naturally self-cleaning. On a dry, cool day, you can air the rug outside—preferably in a light mist or fog, but out of direct sunlight. This removes odors and freshens the material without water or cleaning products.

4. Treat stains immediately and carefully

Did you have an accident? Blot the stain immediately with a clean, dry cloth. If necessary, use a little lukewarm water and a mild natural soap, such as Marseille soap. Blot gently—never rub—to avoid pressing the stain into the fibers.

5. Be careful with washing – have it done professionally

Although hand washing seems possible, it's not recommended for larger wool rugs. Wool can become heavy when wet and become misshapen if dried incorrectly. There's also a risk of color bleeding.

Is your rug really in need of a thorough cleaning? Then take it to a specialized dry cleaner with experience cleaning handmade (Moroccan) wool rugs.

6. Avoid direct sunlight and damp areas

Wool is sensitive to UV rays. Direct sunlight can fade the colors of your rug. Therefore, try not to place the rug in a sunny window.
Also avoid use in damp areas such as bathrooms – wool does not like moisture and can become mouldy or misshapen.

With these tips, you can ensure that your handmade Moroccan wool rug stays beautiful and lasts a long time.
